There is obviously something very deeply important about 3D in AFX that I am failing to understand.

I get behaviours that, to me, are weird and unpredictable. Sometimes I will get layers disappearing when I change their order, even though they do not overlap and exist on the same z-plane. A comp will sometimes display correctly (in 3D space) when I check ‘collapse transformations’ but another will only look ok if I switch CT off, even if both contain a single solid layer. And within that sometimes the solid layer has to also be 3D and sometimes not. Sometimes I get correct 3D but mushy visuals, and sometimes the other way around.

I am currently animating lines over a map. I then fly a camera over the map; ie the map layer never moves. I can’t put all the effects I need on the map layer so have put some solids over it. However, even a simple write-on effect on a small part of the map doesn’t behave the way I would predict. Switching the camera off and then placing my positional keyframes on the solid looks fine… until I switch the camera back on. Yes, the solid is 3D and in the correct position.

Sometimes the write-on effect will (on a solid layer) will look fine but somehow ‘clip’ another layer, and yet will disappear completely when I check ‘continuous rasterization’. How can a layer disappear when CR is on? A simple solid layer with 1 simple mask or write-on effect..? etc etc

Sorry this is so long, but I really need help, is there a definitive guide somewhere?

hi, i’m having exactly the same problems with 3d layers disappearing when i switch Continuous Rasterization on. If I don’t use CR then they look very blurry… if you ever managed to solve it I’d be eternally greatful for your advice. (AE6.5)
