June 19, 2005 at 12:36 amOkay, here’s how to do it in AE Professional. (With 3D Invigorator, which I believe comes with it).
Create a bending spline path in Illustrator, but close it, making a shape. In AE create a wide comp with 3 or four thin rectangular solids that wipe on at different times. Bring that comp into your main comp. Add a solid and apply Invigorator to the solid. Select your spline 3D Illustrator object. Apply the wide animated stripe comp as a “layer map” to the sides of the object.
Although the Invigorator slider will only let you extrude to 100, you can manually type in a thicker extrude (try 500) to create a large bending wall. Turn off the animated lines comp in the main comp, but animate the lines as you see fit. You can check the “use comp camera” box in Invigorator to fly around the curves as the lines wipe on.
A little hard to explain, but that should get you started.

June 21, 2005 at 4:07 amThanks for the great post Jerry, however I am a little lost now. I imported the Illustrator path into AE after creating the 4 solid comp.
“Apply the wide animated stripe comp as a “layer map” to the sides of the object.”
Is that something you do in Invig? (I am rather new to Invig) Or is that something like a track matte??
Thanks a lot,

June 21, 2005 at 4:34 amOkay, I think I figured out where layer maps are. I set layer map 1 to my 4 Solids layer then under Options>Materials palette, there are 4 dark grey boxes , I checked each one and set the drop down to Layer Map 1 but still nothing — it is just a solid 3D grey shape. The 4 solids don’t appear anywhere . . .
