  • 35mm feature in XPress Pro – urgent help

Posted by Stevan on December 20, 2005 at 3:22 am

As an editor I’m in position to sugest future editing system for purchasing to my producer.
Question is what do I need for editing 35mm 24fps feature in Xpress Pro? Mojo for capture?
I have to point out that it’s going to be standard workflow – 25fps (PAL) telecine-DVCAM, 24fps project, 24fps audio.
Is it possible to capture in Avid Symphony and edit in Xpress Pro without Mojo? What would be sugested compression?
Sorry for the ordinary questions but some issues are not clear from http://www.avid.com for me.

Purchasing decision is at the end of this week, so please help. Any article related to film editing in XPress Pro would help.

Best regards to you all at the forum.

Get Xpress Pro HD on a supported HP or Dell PC with a Mojo. If you telecine your picture to DVCAM, then you just need the standard FW cable to go to the Mojo, if you go to Beta SP, then you will need the Mojo component cables (about

You can also import BWF files for the audio as that is becoming more common and is 12x faster than capturing from analog or digital sources in real time. There are timecoded 2 track BWF recorders that start at US$999 which are great in replacing the two track DAT format.

Not to get you off subject but I’m curious to know more about the $1000 BWF recorders – what brands are they so I can research them.

    Thanks a lot for reply.
There is one thing I’m still confused about. Does it mean that I have to open 25fps project instead of 24fps like I did in Media Composer? (all comparations & differences between MC & XPressPro in film editing would be usefull)
Are there still stability problems with XPressPro in combination with Mojo?
Anybody out there experienced with captured footage in another Avid system brought to standalone XPress Pro (in this case it would be Avid Symphony without FW input). Is 14:1 compression in Symphony playable in XPressPro or only 28:1 (without Mojo)?

Best wishes & thanks again for all your help

Moving footage from Meridian, Symphony, Adrenaline to Xpress Pro is done all the time. Xpress Pro can play back DV25, 14:1, 28:1 and 35:1. It can capture as DV25 o 28:1.

As far as project types, it is the same as a Film Composer – you would created 24p project and decide whether it is a Method 1 or Method 2. As Mark pointed out, audio will be an issue especially if you want to stay digital which is why I suggested a file based workflow or as Mark suggested dub audio to a DV format.

For timecoded 2 track BWF recorders:

    Fostex FR-2
    TASCAM HD-P2
