35mm feature in media composer
ologies in advance for the following barrage of questions but i’m hoping somebody with features experience can help me get started.
Soon i will be cutting my first feature project which has been shot on 35mm. I need a bit of help working out my workflow and project management. My experience is pretty much limited to commercials shot, transferred and finished @ 25fps so the features game is quite new to me.
The final delivery for this film will be for cinema projection.
First of all my avid.
The Avid at hand is a version 10 media composer. It does not have the film project option, only the matchback option, so by default the project sequences are 25fps.If the film is shot at 24fps and transferred to BetaSP at 25 fps for my edit, is it as simple as selecting matchback option (35mm 4 perf) when creating my project? Will this enable me to cut away and the end edl i create will be automatically translated back into the corresponding 24fps format for the neg cutters? What am i missing?
Another thing i’m not entirely sure about is keycodes.
My understanding is that they are for the neg cutters to read. So how does the avid know what these codes are? Do i manually enter them into the appropriate field in the bin after digitizing, and they’re then automatically carried through to the final cut list?Would standard practice be to burn the 24fps timecode from telecine onto my 25fps rushes so that i can always check the true film frame being cut? Should the keycodes be burned in also so that i can enter them in to the appropriate fields in my bins? What would be the standard working procedure for this sort of project?
I realise there’s probably quite a bit a need to get schooled up on but if someone has the patience and the knowledge i could really do with some tips.
Thanks!
