Is there a reason to boot SL in 32-bit at all? If you need 32-bit, you can force applications to run in 32-bit by ticking the box next to “32-bit” when you view information about the app.

You can run Resolve without a Decklink card. But you cannot monitor to a video monitor without one.

    64-bit….

And you can run Resolve on a Macbook Pro without a DL card…

My understanding is that hardware-wise, the most fundamental component (besides the basic configuration of memory and process-depth) is CUDA processing, so at the very least, you are not going to get away without an appropriate nVidia GPU.

A developer should step in and correct me here, but looking at the evolution of the product, it really looks like a Linux application shoe-horned into the Mac environment, so the 32/64 bit-ness likely isn’t a factor.

I run Resolve in 64bit mode on the machine I built for it but I have also run it in 32bit mode on the 15″ MBP I have (2.53ghz dual GFX) so it runs on either.

    Hi Ola, Robert and Joseph!

    thanks for replying!

No reason for me to run in 32 bit (Mac installation defaults to 32bit I think), but I thought I ask since I have some problems getting Resolve to run on my 10.6.7 Hackintosh. It crashes while loading “Allocating memory” on both 32bit and 64bit.

Does Resolve create a log file so I can see exactly what went wrong? If so, where can I locate it?

I will reinstall my machine today and make sure it gets as clean as possible and in 64bit ofcource before I install Resolve.

I have an ATI 5770 card for GUI and a GT 285 card for GPU. This is a 3.2Ghz 4 core machine with 12 GB ram, SSD vertex drive for the OS and a 8 TB Raid-0 for video. I also have the Wave panel. Should be OK in theory. 🙂

I’m new to Resolve, but I’ve graded on a Pogle (telecine) for some years.

I have plenty of Decklink cards, but not the HD 3D card btw.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

    Joseph,
Can you please enlighten me on what exactly you mean by memory configuration and process-depth?

    Thanks!
    Andreas

PS! I have the latest CUDA drivers installed for my 285 card.

[Andreas Wideroe] “memory configuration and process-depth?”

You should consult the Resolve configuration guide (“How to Build a Resolve” on the Blackmagic website. Resolve will not run in some circumstances if the installed memory does not conform to the recommendations for various platforms.

As far as process-depth, I was really thinking about the conflicts that exist between some GPUs dealing with 10-bit and above, how threads are shared out among cores — if they are at all– and divisions between multi-threaded media-handling. LIke wouldn’t it be great if someone, somewhere could figure out how to multi-thread-process a Quicktime render?

What board do you have for the Hackintosh? is it a Asus P6T7 ? There are many ways to setup a Mac on PC hardware and some run but end up unstable.

    Hi Robert!

I finally got everything up and running and it seems very stable. I struggled with random crashes and a DaVinci Resolve that wouldn’t start. The problem turned out to be my GUI card: Sapphire ATI 5770. Removed that and it all worked perfectly!

Currently I’ve only got a 285 GTX card in the machine so I may have to shop around for a GUI card. Any recommendations?

My mainboard is a GA-X58A-UDR3 with bios FF, 12 GB DDR3 RAM running 1600Mhz and a i7 950 CPU running 3.2Ghz. Getting 10700 geekbench scores. I think my Rocketraid 2640 is pulling the performance down, but it’s good enough for the moment.

Btw, I took the iBoot route. It’s very simple indeed.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

The Davinci Resolve program is 32 bit, not 64. So I would imagine there would be no benefit in running Snow Leopard in 64 bit given the extra resources required to allocate and shift memory in the OS, and the instability of other non-related drivers that may result from booting in 64bit.

It would be great if someone from Blackmagic Design could confirm / deny this.

    Thanks,

    Marcus.
