Well, I found a solution while writing this but now I’m just curious.

I have been playing around with super-white colors in 32bit, and just noticed that in order to monitor the colors on my broadcast monitor, I have to have a layer underneath the layer I’m working on.

For example, if I just do a simple blur to a super-white text, I can see the colors bleed through on my cinema display, but unless I put a solid or video layer underneath the text layer, my broadcast monitor (panasonic BT-LH1700W) basically just shows what the alpha channel looks like.

Any ideas as to why this is?

I believe this is because AE is effectively rendering without anything below the image to blend with. I usually use a black solid if I don’t have any other layers in the composition and I want to see what the layer looks like premultiplied.

Yep, that’s what I’ve been doing. I guess this is like the opposite of back when we were tape to tape and were supplied premultiplied fills and separate hold out mattes. AE must need that “aura” in 32 bit to be there, not just fade from white to transparent.
