My company just bought an FS-100 to “solve” all our storage needs in the field. Problem is we have already shot close to 1000GB of footage at 30pn on P2 cards. We liked 30pn becuase dropping the interlaced image double our storage capacity on the 4GB P2 cards.

The FS-100 does not record in 30pn from the HVX-200, only p format (24p, 30p, 60p). So far my tests show that 30p footage in a sequence set up for DVCpro HD needs to be rendered. Seems like a pretty basic question but what formats can be edited in FCP without a render required. 30pn gave me no problems at all.

I have my project settings as follows:

    Sequence Preset: DVCPRO HD 720p30
    Capture Preset: DVCPRO HD 720p30

These settings handle 30pn perfectly but not 30p. Did I do something wrong or have I missed a setting? I don’t see a way to differentiate between the two formats.

We go on a four day shoot next week and I have to figure out how to work the FS-100 into the workflow. If we go 30p, we get half the time on a P2 card but at least all the footage will be the same format. If we go 30pn on the P2 cards, we have to do a frame rate conversion to the FS-100 footage. To do FRC on the fly I need to upgrade to FCP 5.1. I’ve never had a seemless upgrade and am dredding that a bit. Not to mention trying to figure out which version is meant for the Intel machines. I haven’t started research into that yet.

Anyway, any opinions or any links to relevant white papaers?

    Thanks in advance.

    Paul
that is due to the fact that when you are shooting in the 30p mode you are actually getting 60fps laid down on the card.

The Software Frame Rate Converter available from Panasonic on the 1200a Deck Support Page will allow you to remove the redundant frames and use your footage correctly at 30p (which by the way is actually 29.97)

    the link is ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/software/DVCPROHDFRC.dmg

THID IS NOT for FCP 5.1- the UB version of the FRC is in the extras folder of your 5.1 installer disk.
