30P Cinematools file conformed to 24P not the correct size!
So here’s my story. I have been shooting 30P on a JVC 110u for a project. I took the 720P m2t files, converted them to sheer video, and then conformed them to 23.98 in cinema tools. Now when I import them into AE, they are about half the normal rez (1280×720.) At first, I thought maybe it wasn’t scaling it correctly, but when I blew the clips up to 200% they looked like crap. When I open them in QT player, they are still the full 720P–AE seems to be the only one who can’t read the size correctly. Is this just a bug in AE, or am I doing something wrong. If it’s a bug, is there another way to conform the files to 23.98 without quality loss?

Are you set to 100% *and* full res in the AE comp window?

Yes. I have double checked and everything is done correctly. It’s weird, I just noticed that all my 30P files are showing up as 1280×720 59.94. The conformed files show as 640×360 23.976. Why isn’t After Effects reading the frame rate correctly on the 30P files?!

Did you try manually interpreting them to what you want? (file>interpret footage>main)

I tried your suggestion, but it didn’t work either. HOWEVER! I did f. ind a work around. There seems to be a bug in either AE or QT on how the footage size is read/written. To get the food rez, I have to open up the clips in QT player, choose actual size and then hit save. It’s annoying, but at least it’s not too time consuming or difficult.

I would guess that the problem is in quicktime since I ran into this problem when looking at conformed files in Shake. Obviously the resolution of the actual file is not changed, but the interpreted size in the file header is changed. Sort of like changing DPI in Photoshop without rescaling the image.
You would think there would be some explicit method for either resizing or NOT resizing files in Cinema Tools. If any Final Cut / Apple experts have comments on this, I’d like to hear them.

Okay, doing a little more research, it seems that ANY HD file you conform in Cinema Tools will not come through with the correct size. I found this out by running a 60P file conformed to 23.98 and the size was incorrect when imported into AE. Lucky I found the QT player trick.
