    I’m making a music video for my A-Level in Media Studies and my school has recently purchased Final Cut Express for us to edit our projects on. I also have iMovie to edit on if it is possible to split screen on that too. There is nowhere explaining how to split screen horizontally 3 ways like in this video here;

    I have three pieces of footage ready to put together already which I think will need to be cropped down to begin with. I understand how to split the screen into four equal squares but I’m completely confused how to manage 3 ways. Any help would be really appreciated!

    Put the clips on three layers then use a four point garbage matte on each one to cut out the bits you don’t need.

    Check out the crop controls in the motion tab of the viewer. Layer your clips, turn up the ‘bottom’ crop on the top clip, and the same but less so on the middle clip. They’ll cover the top parts of the clips below. And you can paste the crop to every clip in the same layer so you don’t have to mess with it a thousand times.

    Assuming these features exist in FC Express, that is. This is how it would work in FCP.

    I’m afraid I’m clueless about the four point garbage matte

    Lots of help videos on youtube have the right screen like this;

    Is that the four point garbage matte? Because when following help videos it seems to automatically come up for everyone but when my group goes to edit it on FCE it doesn’t?

    I’m probably absolutely rubbish at this and am missing something really obvious and simple.

    Thank you for your help by the way!

    I think I know what you mean with the bottom crop and middle crop thing. I’m editing at school on Wednesday so I will give it a try and see if it works, thank you!
