3 Qs: how to create the button activated sub menu? & how have text change colours as sub menu? & compression around text problem
Posted by Justin Tan on April 25, 2005 at 1:37 amI have searched through the doucments and cant seem to find how to create the activated button submenu – create the submenu for where the selection is at is fine however…
the second problem is that when i try to make the entire text turn a different colour – (done by having the submenu be an exact replica of the text but a dif colour) – it doesnt fill the text completely (where it does in photoshop)

Lastly, i have this text as one of the menus and for some reason there is compression artifact around the text when the menu is created (in encore u can’t see this – but when played in power DVD and winDVD -they pop up) – any one know why?
– note text is 17.0pt and uses smooth AAJustin Tan replied 21 years, 2 months ago 3 Members · 9 Replies -

April 25, 2005 at 1:44 pmHello Justin,
Thanks for your ultra fast reply to my button problem. It seems weird that you are geting white edgiong on your texts. Could you email your Encore project file and I wil open it up on my system and take a look for you?

April 25, 2005 at 1:50 pmNp about helping 🙂 always get help on these forums, and am glad i can help others….
I can’t actually send u the proj file because it is for a client… what i am trying to do is something i don’t normally do, but figured i would like to try it…
if u have the time, I would really appreciate it if u tried this…
create a photoshop file and type something with 17 pt font. duplicate that layer and change the colour of the font and ensure that the text are in the exact position…
turn it in to a button and import to encore.. and tell me if the overlay is perfect….

April 25, 2005 at 2:31 pmHello Justin,
I created a text button in Adobe photoshop CS. I then duplicated my layer changed the colour to green and added the button action.
In Encore when I roll over I can see a white outline on my remote over on the button.
I am not sure why this is only thing I can htink of is if I zoom in Photshop CS and then turn both button states initial and roll over I can see this edging as my intial is white text and button roll over is green.
I think maybe the cours of the pixels are spilling over slightly?
I will see any way around this but it is very odd.
Maybe someone else may know of this problem? On the forums? As this problem has me stumped as well as I can’t really see a work around at the moment. If I think of somehting or find out I will psot back here.
Thanks,
-Leo 🙂

A1- I don’t understand the question. A submenu is a menu like any other menu and you can link a button to a timeline or to a menu. What is it that you want to do?
A2- What you are seeing may be caused by the fact that the text in the background is antialiased, which makes it “spread” a little, while the subpicture overlay consists of a single color and therefore can’t be antialiased, making it appear smaller.
A solution could be to put a stroke on the subpicture highlight to make it slightly fatter, or to reduce the opacity of the highlight so that the text in the background shines through a bit (visually blending the difference between the two).
A3- A still menu background on a DVD is a single MPEG-2 I-frame. This is compressed similar to a JPEG still. The artifacting may be a product of this compression. JPEG and MPEG compression doesn’t work well on flat colors. It may help to add a little bit of noise or other structure to the background blue.

April 26, 2005 at 12:58 amthank you so much Roadkill – the reasoning and suggestions for Q2 are great…as with Q3…
regarding Q1 – what i mean is i’m not sure how to structure it….
Could u upload a basic buttonwhich has the button layer, selection submenu and activated submenu in there? – i have read through the text and help and have opened the button files given with encore, all don’t have an activation submenu as far as i can see……
does this make sense?

I think that instead of “submenu” you mean “subpicture” – the part that takes care of the button highlighting. There is an excellent video tutorial on subpicture creation available at adobeevangelists.com: Adobe Encore DVD (Highlight Colors – The Lowdown on Subpictures).
