3 basic questions
Posted by Paul Gregory on July 29, 2012 at 7:53 amI usually start most projects by getting the video track mostly done first & I leave audio to much later. Is it possible to reopen a project without having to have the peaks built or re built?
As for all of the temp files that Vegas generates can they all be stored in the same location so that they can all be deleted at once when project is finished?
Can Vegas be set to remember the last location that you imported files from so that you don’t have to point out the route again next time files are opened? Similarly van it remember where you wish your renders to be put without always specifying it again?
Thanks in advance

Options – Prefs – General and pick the desired location as shown below.

There’s no setting for it but it generally does that for me.

Same as above.

Vegas should not rebuild the peaks every time you open a project. If this is happening, it sounds like you might be deleting the peak files. Those are the *.sfk files that Vegas produces. These are not really “temporary” files. They are data that Vegas needs to draw the audio waves. If you delete them, Vegas will create them so in that sense they are “temporary” but they are “required” by Vegas to display the audio.

I assume you are talking about the *.sfk, *.sfl, *.sfap0, etc. files because as Mike pointed out, the “real” temp file are all kept in your windows temp folder.
The answer is no, because these files are metadata about your media and are kept in the same folder as the media. For example, 0001.mts would have a 0001.mts.sfk file in the same folder. If Vegas were to keep these in one folder, and you imported media from several media cards into different folders that all created a 0001.mts file, the 0001.mts.sfk files would overlay each other when placed in a common folder. This would require Vegas to keep track of the path as well and it was probably easier to just create them in the same folder as the media so that they get backed up with the media as well.
I’ve created a plug-in called VASST Ultimate S Pro that has a tool that will remove these files with a single click. I realize you’re not going to purchase an entire plug-in for one small feature but Vegas editors have been dealing with these files for quite some time and we plug-in providers have created solutions.

This is a good one for the Sony Product Suggestion page. Sony ACID has the ability to specify which folders to place various assets in but unfortunately, Vegas Pro does not and it drives me crazy too. It seems I spend most of my time navigating the file system because Vegas remembers the last folder you opened regardless of if it had anything to do with the current project you are working on. I see now why Apple is moving toward hiding the file system and having applications deal with their own data. For most cases, this would make things a lot easier.

Well, yes. . . . It is expensive “dumb” time too. It isn’t time that adds any value in any way to my creative activity.
I’ve more than thrice brought this to SCS over the years, and can’t quite work out what “deaf ears” my suggestion is falling on. However, I have many of my own and other’s suggestions incorporated. But this is such a truly a fundamental requirement, it is beyond my wit and wisdom why it hasn’t happened, and happened a long long time ago.
As Johnny says, ACID has it!
Cheers
