    Dearest Colleagues,

First and foremost, thank you for your time. I have a quick question that is likely academic but never the less eludes me.

I have a graphic, for the sake of clarity, lets call it a CD (with a hole in the center) which is colored red and blue. My goal is to give that circle depth. The end result is going to be an effect where the “thickened” CD is going to do a fly by, etc, which is not important here.

My question is, quite simpy, how do you take a 2D image from photoshop and give it depth in After Effects. My only other option is to use something like autocad and then do some type of conversion but that seems a bit too much.

Any help, guidance or pointing me in the right direction will be greatly apppreciated.

    Thanks

    Walt

Depending on what camera move you are planning, you can space multiple copies of the same layer slightly apart. Another cheap&dirty trick is to use the shatter effect with a custom shatter map in the shape of your object. However, it too is prone to clipping problem and other potential rendering glitches, so beware. If that’s not feasible, then I’m afraid you can’t avoid venturing into the realm of 3D by means of Zaxwerks Invigorator or a “real” 3D program.

    Dear Colleagues,

I just jumped through some hoops and hurdles to get a trial version of ZakWorks on my box and I am not really impressed with it. It seems a lot more complicated than I really need.

Are there any other plug in that anybody could recommend. This one seems like its overpriced and the code itself seems a bit long in the tooth. I dont know. I just get a bad feeling. Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, I am just not impressed with it and it looks like a beast to learn.

Does anybody know of something simpler that may be out there?

    Regards,

    Hi Walt,

Zaxwerks (the company) offers two different 3D apps that work inside of After Effects: 3D Invigorator and ProAnimator. ProAnimator also runs as a standalone. They share modeling abilities but are vastly different in how they handle animating the 3D objects. They’re very simple to use, compared to typical 3D apps, including Lightwave, Maya, Cinema, etc. At the same time, they’re quite powerful and capable of producing very high-quality animations.

Before you dismiss the demo you have, I’d invite you to drop by the Zaxwerks forum on the COW for some advice on your project. I have a feeling that a bit of basic instruction will help you quickly get what you want.

Having a boss who does not care how much it costs, just how much its worth has its good points.

I just went and got myself Zakworks 3D invigorator without an issue. Its done. Problem is that now all I seem to be able to do is do something with a ball.

Are there any tutorials out there that you guys know of?

Its great to learn, but this is pretty darn hard actually. Should I be getting another product in addition to the plug in?

    Hey Walt,

Here is a project that includes a CD: https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=41&postid=855323
Ignore the DVD case and check on how the CD was created. this should get you going.

Furthermore, as Jon already mentioned, we would be pleased to assist you systematically at the Zaxwerks forum to get your project done.

    Salut.

    And another thing. . .

I have been using photoshop, but I see a lot of stuff with Zak talking about illustrator. Hmmm. You guys possibly think I need that “Cow” rather than photoshop, or a combination thereof?

    This is so much fun!

    Thanks again.

Here’s the link for the video tutorials you need.

    And yes…
You’ll have to use Adobe Illustrator to create the vector shapes.
