29.97 Quicktime Frame Rate changes to 23.98 in FCP
Posted by Scott Anderson on February 12, 2009 at 5:10 pmI’ve exported a 29.97 After Effects project as an 8bit Uncompressed 29.97 file. When it’s opened in Quicktime it shows 29.97 as the frame rate. When importing into FCP it shows 23.98. Can someone explain why it changes? The export format is preferred by the studio I use for broadcast dubs. Thanks.

February 12, 2009 at 5:44 pmIs your Easy Setup or sequence set to some custom format?
With the clip selected in the browser, press command-9 and info pop-up should show – it will state the frame rate. What does it say?

February 12, 2009 at 5:58 pmIn FCP the clip shows 23.98, sequence is 29.97. When the 29.97 project/clip was exported from AE, it was set to export at 29.97. If I open the exported clip in Quicktime, it shows 29.97. It’s only in FCP that the clip shows 23.98. When it’s in FCP it goes exactly to the 30 second mark. The only reason we noticed the 23.98 was the audio would come in a little off. The editor forced the video to match in his FCP
and the spot played smooth.Scott Anderson

February 12, 2009 at 6:31 pmI have seen this a few times on things coming from After Effects. It’s some kind of metadata problem that causes FCP to misread the frame rate.
The way to fix this is to open the file in Cinema Tools and conform to the proper frame rate. The change is instantaneous…no rendering or anything. There is no change in quality, as its not really doing anything except fixing the metadata.
When you bring the clip back into FCP it should read the frame rate properly.

February 12, 2009 at 6:42 pmThat was it. I opened it in Cinema Tools and even though it said the file was 29.97 I clicked conform and as you mentioned – instant fix.
THANKS! Big time relief….Scott Anderson

February 12, 2009 at 11:07 pmJohn, very cool. this sort of glitch is so weirdly random, I never would have considered your solution. In fact, I’ve never even opened Cinema Tools in FCS2.

April 17, 2010 at 4:19 amOkay here is a new one. Editing a sizzle reel off of a ripped DVD. Ripped the needed chapters with Mac the ripper. Used DVDxDV to convert the VOBs to quicktimes.
All the clips came in at 23.976. Progressive. Audio is in sync, all is well. Quicktime inspector says 23.98. Cinema Tools Analysis says 23.98 (reverse telecine, AND Conform are greyed out).
If I drag the clips into FCP. They come in as 29.97. So opened the files in QT and exported them in the same format at 23.976.
I bring them back into FCP, and 11 out of 14 work fine. 3 of them show a 23.98 framerate, but really play at 12fps. Meaning every frame is played twice. Audio is in sync, but image is not fluid.
If I bring the original file into FCP, the one that “claims” 29.97, the video is sped up (it’s like it conformed the 23.98 footage to 29.97) audio is out of sync.
Did the export with both QT, and compressor. Same 3 clips just don’t want to work.
Is there a way to read, and change a QT file’s metadata?
