29.97 playback from a 23.98 timeline
We’re having issues achieving clean 29.97 playback from a 23.98 timeline. While the captured footage looks fine when viewing through the QuickTime player, or in FCP’s Viewer or Canvas window, video passing through our Kona cards appears jerky, like there is a cadence issue. This is happening on both our Kona 2 and Kona LH systems. This is something we have done many times previously, but I don’t believe we have had any 23.98 projects with our current configurations. Both systems have had clean installations of all software, with no upgrades since. (except for tests with AJA … see below)
Software configuration:
OS 10.4.8
QT 7.1.3
FCP 5.1.2
Kona 3.3What I’ve done (with the assistance of the nice folks at AJA support):
1. Kona Control Panel — Default output=Test Pattern; Genlock=FreeRun (our LH system uses a sync generator)
2. Deleted all preferences for FCP, Kona and Quicktime.plugins
3. Removed all 3rd party codecs (DivX, Avid and TechSmith)
4. Removed all FCP plug-ins except for the AJA Kona RT Enabler
5. Reset PRAM
6. Upgraded to Kona 3.4 (on our K2 system)
7. Triple checked the camera settings — definitely shot at 23.98 using a Panasonic SDX900
8. Video playback in FCP is set to 525i 29.97 10bit
9. Sequence is set to Uncompressed 10-bit, 23.98I have been occasionally lucky in capturing a single 23.98 clip that plays back just fine in a 23.98 timeline, but this issue really shows itself when capturing multiple 23.98 clips. If I change the capture preset to 29.97, clips played back in a 29.97 timeline look just fine. I’m trying to think of as many variables as I can for troubleshooting. Hopefully, I haven’t left out any vital information. Anyone here like to take a stab at this?
Thanks!
