Activity Forums Avid Media Composer 29.97 and 23.98 mixed frame rate workflow for finishing in AVID

Former avid guy, fcp guy, avid guy again. Now with that disclaimer out of the way –

What is the proper workflow for dealing with mixed frame rates? DP shot multiple cameras and had some set at 29.97 and some 23.98. I know you can load the 24p stuff in a 24p project, load the 29.97 stuff in a 29.97 project and open bins from one project in the other.

So, say you edit a sequence with mixed frame rates. How do you deal with that sequence when it’s time to export a file, or even “master” to a file rather than tape? Won’t AVID convert the 24p to 29.97 upon transcoding, but do it rather badly? i.e, no real pulldown?

    What’s the correct workflow?

[Chris Tomberlin] “What is the proper workflow for dealing with mixed frame rates?”

You can mix them fine in Avid MC 4 and up. Avid mixes frame rates REALLY well. Unlike FCP. Just choose the format you want to deliver, and use those project settings.

[Chris Tomberlin] “So, say you edit a sequence with mixed frame rates.”

    Yup, I just said that.

[Chris Tomberlin] “How do you deal with that sequence when it’s time to export a file, or even “master” to a file rather than tape?”

Just export to the format you need. The frame rate mixing will still look fine.

If you use 29.97 project settings, yes, it will.

[Chris Tomberlin] “but do it rather badly? i.e, no real pulldown?”

No, it’ll do it very well.
