29.75 fps – surprising popular HD format? Anyone use this?
Hi all,
Extreme Reach came out with a survey of HD trends: their 2012 Q2 Broadcaster Supplement.
They describe two formats as having 29.75 fps (not 29.97 fps). I’ve seen lots of specs from networks, but never that frame rate. Maybe Extreme Reach is incorrect…?
HD continues to be a vexing issue for producers, with not only SD vs. HD to choose from, but further, which HD, how to create text/visuals/output for SD compatibility, and the relatively higher delivery cost of HD.
Anyone come across the 29.75 frame rate? Is there a standard Compressor format that works well for this?

To save you having to dig up the report, here’s their “Top 5 HD formats” for broadcast and cable outlets. They say this is the top 5, but indicated there are hundreds of format permutations requested by networks. (So much for the HD transition ushering in new standards.)

Dave, that was my reaction, as well.
This data came from Extreme Reach, which I’ve had my doubts about as an objective source of information on broadcast matters.
