I need to deliver 29.97i for broadcast (along with 29.97p for social). Source material is 29.97p renders from C4D and After Effects. I have been editing in a 29.97p sequence. Can I export from this sequence with export settings set to 29.97i? Would I change the sequence settings to 29.97i then export with match source settings?

I did a test export and I see interlaced scan lines (on a computer monitor) on the one exported from a 29.97i sequence, but not the one exported from a 29.97p sequence with 29.97i export setting. I have access to an edit bay tomorrow with a broadcast monitor to QC, but I’m curious what workflow I should be following, especially if one of these is not correct. TIA.

Master to 29.97p and then transcode to 29.97i. The easiest transcode there is and it should be indistinguishable from the 29.97p as long is it is being played via a true interlaced system (which is nearly impossible outside of an old school post house). You can also playout the 29.97p original to an interlaced recorder if your destination is tape.

I highly recommend you never go the other direction, from the 29.97i back to 29.97p, or playback the interlaced file anywhere in the real world as almost all playback systems will “deinterlace” the image at some point. This should result in a perfect progressive image if the fields are simply re-interlaced without processing, but in my experience it often results in a somewhat degraded image due to unecessary processing.

    Cheers,
