285 mac version vs. OC flashed 285?
Posted by Sean Kapleton on December 30, 2010 at 4:28 pmI am curious to get opinions on this.
A local reseller has a MAC GTX 285 (opened box but never used) available for $436 as well as an open boxed GT120 (never used) for $134 but as Robbie pointed out to me in a previous post there is an Over Clock flashed version on Ebay for around the same price – is it really worth my trouble or should I just be happy to have found a MAC version of this card locally both on discount?
Performance-wise is it that much of an extra kick that I should get the OC ebay version?
thanks in advance

December 30, 2010 at 5:07 pmAFAIK the Mac version should always be from EVGA.
We have one and it has pretty good cooling. We have a flashed PC version too in another station and I’m under the impression it’s running hotter. The 285 is really eating lots of power and running pretty hot. I wouldn’t overclock it for the sake of reliability.

December 30, 2010 at 5:26 pmsean if you can get it locally (which I could not) and cheaper seems like a pretty easy choice. I would agree with ULI that the 285 esp the over clocked runs a little hotter but nothing crazy that I’ve worried about it

December 30, 2010 at 7:59 pmthank you guys for the info – seems I am best off just sticking with the version I found.
now it’s time to learn – so excited to get I to this!
I am aware that fxphd has a training but I missed the semester so anyone know of some other training tutorials out or shortly to be released for a color guy who knows nothing about resolve?!
cheers

December 30, 2010 at 8:03 pm[Alex Borges] “with an overcloked one you always run the risk of frying it.”
keep in mind thought that the overclocked versions are factory overclocked by Nvidia. So yes the’ll run hotter but in the months of using the OC version (and now 2 with the cubix) they don’t seem to be a problem

December 30, 2010 at 10:43 pm@ Robbie – ahhh don’t make me obsess and doubt my mac 285!! I’ll take your first response to heart unless you can somehow sell me on getting the OC version : )
In terms of training – I am a beginner having never used anything other than Color – will intermediate skip the 101 stuff I need to understand? I have yet to hear about any other training besides actual classes.
thanks for all your help -

December 31, 2010 at 8:52 amhopefully in the next term of FXPHD they’ll have both the intro level and the intermediate level, sometimes they do that, I guess we’ll find out in a couple of days when the new term is announced.

December 31, 2010 at 2:14 pmseriously sean don’t worry about it. Since I couldn’t get the regular 285 side by side with the OC one. Its difficult for me to tell if it’s “faster” but comparing some things like node count and render speed it seems like it might be 2%-3% faster but thats not really a big deal

December 31, 2010 at 2:38 pmcool thx Robbie
sorry for my OCD on this whole thing – I really appreciate your help as well as the other guys in this forum.Wish you had a training coming out but looks like I’ll just have to sign up for the next semester at fxphd…maybe take both beginner & intermediate course offerings for Resolve, and then maybe throw in an apple color II or Intro to Storm as my 3rd elective.
have a great new years everyone!
best
