25fps conversion to 24fps – then speed back up picture? Clever or stupid idea?
Hello all,
I’ve read a bunch of posts about the 24fps/25fps conversion routes but I couldn’t find the answer to an idea I had.We have a feature film shot at 25fps that we need to convert to 24fps for DCP/delivery.
All fine – we just change the ‘interpret footage’ setting to 24fps, the video is now longer and we slow down the audio to match and then alter the pitch so it sounds almost the same.‘Almost’ being the key word.
I dislike the movie at this slower speed. I know it’s only 4% but it really shows to me. I know most people won’t even notice the difference having never seen the 25fps version but I just don’t like this version.
So, I did an experiment doing the 24fps conversion, rendering out a new “24fps Master” and then in a 24fps timeline in After Effects I sped up the VIDEO by the required amount to get the duration to match the original ’25fps’ duration and mix. (I know sound doesn’t work in FPS, using ’25fps mix’ as a way of describing the original non-slowed down mix with the correct duration)
Unfortunately the 25fps mix is now out of sync in random places and in sync in others. I guess it’s something to do with the way in which After Effects (I’ve also tried it in Premiere) retimes the footage in a variable fashion?
Is there a way of speeding the footage back up so I can use the original ’25fps’ mix and it’ll remain in sync?
Are there picture issues I may have going forward with this idea?Any help from cleverer people than myself would be most appreciated.
Best,
Phil
