Hi, I imported 24pA footage into AE…I interpreted it and put it in a 24fps timeline but there are some frames where there is blurred movement and it looks quite terrible…anyone got any ideas?

[Grayson Sedory] “I interpreted it and put it in a 24fps timeline”

there are a variety of pitfalls with a 24p workflow… i’m not sure if this is your problem, but a common problem is the actual frame rate for 24p is really be 23.976fps (some nle’s call it 23.98, but ae needs it to be 23.976).

try dragging the footage onto the make comp icon, this will insure that the comp takes on the same frame rate as the footage and would rule out ae trying to compensate for any discrepancy and interpolating a new frame.

if the frame rate is not the problem, make sure you are separating the correct field order.

also, has the 24pa media been edited or is a single shot from the camera. if the footage had been edited, you’ll have a lot of trouble fully removing the interlaced frames since the cadence of interlaced and progressive frames would change from edit to edit. meaning you’ll need to split your clip into individual shots to effectively remove the pulldown.

and just to make sure… the native frame rate for the 24pa clip in ae is 29.97fps, correct (if you’re not separating fields, ae says the frame rate is 29.97)? if it is 23.976 fps, then the advance pulldown has already been removed, and by trying to remove it again may cause unusual frames….

Hey, thanks for the response…when I imported the footage into FCP I already removed the pulldown and the footage is now at 23.976….and when I import it into AE Drag it to the make new comp button and it still has these strange blurry frames that are not there in the original footage… It might have to do with the field tho…I thought since its 24p that there is no field order…what should I chose for field order?

Hi, thanks for the response, I really appreciate these very knowledgeable responses and yes I meant “CAPTURE”, for some reason in find myself sometimes saying import when I mean capture and I do understand the difference but i’ll try to stop myself from doing that.

But basically you’re saying that I need to log each clip individually in order for them to come out correctly? This is something that I usually do anyway except that right now I have so much footage (over 3 hours) that I have to capture, edit, and include some after effects within a couple weeks. Also is there any way to find out of it did not remove the pulldown other than the look of the footage…if it still says 23.976 in the properties?

Thats actually what I have been doing…but if that says 23.976 does that mean it removed the pulldown and I’m all set? If so, that means that I am importing already pulled down footage into after effects, why is the footage so terrible in AE while its perfectly fine in FCP?

yea everything is set on high…i even exported my project and tried to combine it with the rest of the clip in my FCP timeline and it didn’t come out too bad…but there is a difference…when i find the matching frame to continue my shot from the one with added effects the one from after effects is blurry and the same frame is not blurry in FCP…it comes out decent but not perfect. I suppose that this will probably end up working however, I would like to figure out why this is for next time.
