After years of shooting P2 I had a avid(on a mac) client the other day call me to say the 720 24p(over60) footage we shot is not 24p. He says the system is not playing back the footage as 24p rather 60. In my fcp system the same clip says its 23.98 DVCProHD 60p. I didn’t think avid could use 24pn. what are we doing wrong? How do you shoot actual 24p footage that will play back as such in a nle timeline? I always thought the 24p(60) was 24p after the nle applied the pull down during the “unwrapping” of the mfx file. Please help,

    thanks,

It’s easy to tell. Simply step through the footage frame by frame. If the footage has 3 duplicate frames followed by two duplicate frame, you shot 24p over 60. If there’s no duplicates, then you shot 24pN. During monitoring, 720p24N always gets pulldown added to it to conform to SMPTE’s 720p spec. You will always watch 720p60 on a monitor, even if it’s 24p with pulldown, it’s still 60 frame/sec.

    Thanks Jeremy,
So let me clarify. I gave my client 60p not 24p? If I had shot 24pn would that be 24p(23.98) in playback on a monitor? isn’t that what the “pulldown” is supposed to do is make the playback of the 24p(over60) playback with the frame rate style of true 24p? Is there a way of at this point making it look like true 24p even though I didn’t shoot 24pn?

    [P2 Shooter] “I gave my client 60p not 24p?”

I don’t know, what is your camera set to? 720p24 or 720pN24?

[P2 Shooter] “If I had shot 24pn would that be 24p(23.98) in playback on a monitor?”

Not in 720p. The NLE will add 3:2 progressive pulldown to make it compliant.

[P2 Shooter] “isn’t that what the “pulldown” is supposed to do is make the playback of the 24p(over60) playback with the frame rate style of true 24p?”

Precisely. If you shot 24p over 60, it will look like 24p.

[P2 Shooter] “Is there a way of at this point making it look like true 24p even though I didn’t shoot 24pn?”

I think that’s unnecessary. You have to 24p look provided you shot 720p24 on the camera, and not 720p60.

What he said. If you shot 24p, no matter what system you are on, it will be 59.94 with the 24p look. Only 24pN gets you to actual 23.98fps.
