I know about 24p,I thought 23.97 was the NTSC version,so what is 23.98.Do you shoot 24p and make 23.98 after editing?

    Thanks

    Varicam settings to shoot 23.98

Set vtr to 59.94 hz which will results in 23.98 when camera is set to 24P
Set vtr to 60.00 hz which will results in 24.00 when camera is set to 24P

Only Varicams above “F” model can do 60hz as well as 59.94 hz.

    Why shoot 23.98?

Well if your editing or eventual distribution route involves NTSC at 29.97 then you need to use 23.98.

F900 HDCAM settings to shoot 23.98

Set camera to 23.98 psf which results in 23.98 recording
Set camera to 24.00 psf which results in 24.00 recording

Options for post if you shot at 24.00 but really need 23.98 is to play back vtr at 23.98 (in effect playback the original 24.00 recording slower at 23.98) Just like what occurs when you shoot film at 24 and do a telecine xfer.

    Thanks for the replies.

The shoot is a series for Discovery shot on F900.According to the dir they have requested 23.98,but having the camera at 24p is fine?

So why not shoot 30p I wonder,he doesnt know either…so all a bit confusing.

Yes sorry this is actually the question

    Thanks

23.98 has become a default standard to make life overall simplier for both those in the field and in post.

It just becomes idiot proof sort of when everyone standarizes on an exact frame rate.

Shoot at 30P (actually 29.97P) in this case is another option when less motion blurring is desired or you are not concerned about the post production path to create a PAL master for overseas airing.

In Discovery’s case shooting at 23.98 allows them to create a universal master as NTSC and PAL masters can be created while retaining the edited 23.98 HD master.

Then I wonder why is there a 23.97 setting and a seperate 24 setting in the camera F900? nes par?

Consult with the post production people and ask them if they prefer 24P and why.

Or have the director be completely responsible for any technical misinformation in writing and let it become his problem if his instructions are wrong.

    Hi there

Thanks for the info.Did the shoot at 23.98p.Seems this is good for NTSC land and also good for making PAL copies too. This seems to be The History channels answer to all problems.

    Thanks
