24p to 29.97i. Standards Conversion for TV?
I have some TV spots built in AE, as they’re full animation. COMPs were built to 23.976p. Which we do almost always.
We have TV delivery for AIR and our normal delivery method accepts 24p ProRes files. No problemo!However our local stations require 29.97i. With CONFORM being done in Premiere Pro for audio layback and slating, is it better to render our of AE and perform the Standards Conversion there? Here was my test settings:
AE COMP – 23.976p
Output Module: ProRes 422 HQ
Render Settings: Use frame rate 29.97.
Turn ON Field Render to Upper Field First with 3:2 pulldown set to WWWSS.Does AE do a better job rendering this sort of thing out or is it OK to drop 24p render into Premiere Pro and do the Standards Conversion there to 29.97i on final output? I thought I read somewhere they use the same rendering engine but wasn’t sure if one was better than the other. I can not tell a difference on my test. With Interlaced set on my FSI monitor, both show the proper fields rendered.

I had to do this recently for a broadcast project as well. I know this sounds ridiculous but going from 23.976 to 29.97 is a problem, however going from true 24p to 29.97 is technically accurate with a 3:2 pulldown. Check out the math on wikipedia: “3:2 pulldown”.
Not sure on premiere, but I was doing this from AE to Avid MC. Avid is extremely picky, whereas premiere tends to just do things in the background and not really tell you about it (which can almost be worse sometimes). However I definitely trust premiere more than Avid…

i think wiki is a little vague. they say to slowdown. all dvd’s are 23.976 with a pulldown to 29.97.
