My production team is taping xdcam disc at 24P. But my post team wants to edit offline at 29.97 15:1 NTSC. My questions is this:

If the Sony 1600 deck applies pulldown on the original 24P material and makes new 29.97 NTSC footage, when I decomp and go to batch capture, how does the deck recapture the footage. The timecode will be different.

For example; if my 29.97 footage starts a cut at frame 27 or 28, how will the deck know which frame to start the batch capture?

    Thank you in advance,

    Dustyn

What is the point of offlining at a different frame rate?

I need to edit in low-resolution. Can I do 24 fps NTSC?

Yes. There is a setting for 23.98 NTSC.

You can edit at 14:1 resolution at 23.976p and get an extra 20% savings in storage with a lot better looking picture quality for offline editing.

I think 15:1s (which is half raster, 48 mins/GB)) is a lot smaller than 14:1p (which is progressive, 14.6 mins/GB). But 35:1p (36.4 mins/GB) or 28:1p (29.1 mins/GB) will definitely give you an easier workflow, and will likely look much better.

If you can spare the bandwidth, go for 14:1p. If you really need to save on bandwidth, I’d sooner choose 35:1p @23.976p than 15:1s @29.97i, as it allows you to post in native 23.976p.
