We shot our movie using the panasonic dvx100 (alas, no ‘a’) . . . we’ve edited and are having a screening in a big 1100 seat theater using a digital projector. Because the space is so huge, we are really worried about how our film will blow up and sound. We want to know the safest tape format to master to and the best way to project it . . . we will be renting the deck for the theater but they already have a high quality projector. (its at the digital cinema laboratory in hollywood) we’ve been told that many people rip back to mini dv, but that dvcam might be better or even dvcpro. do you have any advise??

Digibeta will give the best projected presentation or straight from DV but it’s slightly less reliable as a projection format and not as long as Digi. Cheaper but still good and reliable would be Beta SP.

There is no difference between DV, mini DV, DVCAM or DVCPRO images. Depending on where your movie is right now, (I would assume that it is still in your edit system), you might look at exporting in DVCPRO50 codec which will give you better edge detail and fine detail. Also, get some Sony DVCAM Mastering tape to record to. It gives richer color and is virtually drop-out free.

As Noah said, if you could export to Digibeta, you would most likely get a very nice image. This could be expensive though.

At NAB, Apple’s big dog and pony show was all done from a computer displaying an H.264 compressed file. WOW!

Why go with a different projector than the theater already has? Can you get in to do a few tests? What did you shoot it on? What are you editing on and with what codec?

    Thanks everyone . . .

I shot on mini dv (panasonic dvx100) and have been advised from others to take my edit on my hard drive and bite the financial bullet to up-convert to HD-5 since the projector we’re using is HD digital and the screen is HUGE (we don’t want to take any risks) . . .

    but its all pretty confusing . .. and expensive . . . I know we won’t gain any quality . . . but hopefully this way I won’t risk losing any either . . .

if anyone is in LA on nov 18th come see how this little mastering and up-coverting experiment worked out . . .
