I have a client that is shooting a talking head in front of a green screen.
They are using the Panasonic DVX100 and shooting at 24p recording to 29.97 with the 2:3 in camera.

The final output will be NTSC 29.97.

I was originally thinking to import the footage at 24 so that I could work with less frames and no interlacing. Pull the chroma key and then add the 2:3 back into the final.

Is 24p Advanced easier to remove than the standard 24p?

Is this an insane idea, should I just stick with the 29.97 and key from that?

    Thanks,

    -Matt

Stick with the 29.97 and key with that. Interlacing won’t be an issue. Green screen has been done for YEARS at 29.97 with no problems.

    Thanks,

I had a feeling that would be the answer.
I just got done reading a ton of threads
in the Cow and other forums with Stock Answer #23 attached to it.

    Thanks for all the info.

My theory is edit at what it was shot at. If it is 24p then edit 24p. When you make a master tape, using firewire or a capture card, you can add in a standard 2:3 pulldown then. If you go to DVD or web, then you don’t have interlacing issues when you try to compress it because you can just use the native 23.98 file that is progressive (plus you’ll save space because of having fewer frames.)

So sure, you might be able to pull a key off of 29.97 with a 2:3 pulldown on it, but why when your native file is 23.98? I’d sure like to make a decision up front that takes a little more time than having to go back when I’m trying to deliver the show and have to redo something.

Yes, you can remove the 24PA over firewire as you digitize. 24P needs to go through Cinema Tools or an enabled capture card (kona, decklink.)

That’s just my opinion of the safe way to do things.

[Dave LaRonde] “I’d be more worried about pulling a good-looking key from DV footage; I’m going to assume that’s not a big concern of yours.”

No, it is. I was just thinking that working with a progressive image versus an interlaced one might be a tad easier.

    Thanks for the tips guys.
