24p on dvd
I need some help with basic understanding of the following questions:
What would it look like if I took a 24p comp rendered in AE and created a dvd from it directly? Is there a process during the transcoding that brings it up to NTSC standard 29.97p automatically?
When is it a good time to go progressive in my work flow? In the beginning with Fieldskit, or at the very end before rendering out the final product?
What if i have interlaced and progressive footage from the start of my project, how do I marry them in a composition. De-interlace the one, or re-interlace the other?
Does de-interlacing softens the image? by definition is it a loss of resolution?

you can make a progressive dvd using all 24p footage, and i believe it is then the dvd player then handles the interlacing if it is set to play out to an interlaced device.
as far as workflow, if all your footage is 24p, then work entirely in 24p. when you are finished, if you need to create 30i (29.97) for tape or to meet broadcast standard, interlace and add a pulldown at that point. your nle should do this and there are probably other utilites, but in ae you can take you 24p comp, add to render queue and then click render settings. change the frame rate to 29.97 (thanks dave for saving me one step), set field render to the appropriate setting, and set the pulldown (any setting should be fine, most people use the first).
you would prefer to never have to edit 24p with a pulldown added (converted to 30i) because you will create inconsistencies in the order of progressive frames and interlaced frames that is inherent inconverting 24p to 30i. however, convering native 30i to 24p will result in dropping 1 out of every 5 frames (creating a slight jump) or interpolating some new frames that will rarely look as good as the orginal frames.
so, avoid mixing the two. when you can’t, your workflow will get tricky.
if you don’t have much 24p footage, convert it and add the pulldown to edit into a 30i timeline. avoid having two 24p clips edited together in your project, if you have some, you may want to edit those in a 24p timeline and render that with a pulldown added to then drop into your 30i timeline. or just try to edit in a place where the 2 clips have the same cadence in the 30i timeline by looking at the order of whole frames versus interlaced frames for the last 5 frames of the clip before the edit and the next five frames of the clip after the edit to see if they match.
if you don’t have much 30i footage, then you may want to make that 24p and edit everything in a 24p timeline.
if you equal amounts of both, converting your 24p to 30i and being careful with your edits is probably the easiest way and will produce good results. you just need to be careful where you edit your converted 24p footage.
