24p footage audio sync help desperately needed
Hi all,
First time poster in desperate need of help.
We shot a short film over this past weekend.
We shot on a Panasonic EX – we shot P2 to a firestore but also simultaneously to tape.
1080i 24p
When log and transferring from the firestore the footage came in DVCPRO HD 1080p30 @ 29.97 1280×1080 – when trying to reverse telecine for the edit Cinema Tools refused saying there was “Temporal Compression” – this is a problem I have seen in other forums and found no real solution to.
The footage from the drives was also distractingly interlaced.
As a solution I decided to give up on the drive footage and digitize from the tape. I am concerned that I digitized incorrectly as I am now having the following issues.
We recorded sound separately to hard drive and I had been syncing using the clapper.
The audio synced fine with the 29.97 footage from the hard drive.
However now my audio is wildly out of sync with the footage digitized from tape.
Settings are:
Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ)
1920 x 1080 (square pixel)
29.97Via AJA Kona.
When I reverse telecine the clips they are at 24fps (my knowledge is limited but I assumed they’d be 23.98) is this indicative of the problem?
This is my first time working with 24p footage – what am I doing wrong?

I assume you mean a Panasonic HVX? If you captured from tape, then you are capturing SD.

Big whoops on the camera front.. you are probably correct there.. I asked someone on the crew the camera type and must have mis-heard. I ain’t no DOP.
I’m not sure how the footage could be SD – everything indicates it is 1080i – I thought the two were mutually exclusive. How would I check this?
Are you suggesting I work with the footage from the drive instead? Do you have any solutions for my problems with that footage?

If it is the HVX200 (is it the HVX200, please let me know as it could be the HDX900 in which case this conversation will change). The HVX200 only shoots SD to tape.

You know what.. I actually just did a quick google of both those cameras – it was absolutely not an HVX200. I’m not sure what it was but I do know it’s a pretty high end camera.
On my way out right now to do more digitizing.. will respond with the camera type once my director gets back to me.
So sorry not to provide correct info straight up!
