Here’s what I’ve done so far.

I recorded video at 24p using my canon hfs-100 and converted to cineform avi. The cineform video looks great.

I then opened in vegas movies studio platinum using project properties 23.97 fps, progressive scan, no interlacing. For height/width I’ve tried both 1440×1080 and 1920 x 1080.

I edit, and then render to mainconcept mpg-2 NTSC Widescreen video stream.

When I watch the rendered video, it looks horrible. Any thoughts as to what I am doing wrong. Thanks.

Are you certain that Cineform is compatible with Studio?

What does “horrible” look like? You are rendering 24p source to 60i. Did you try the DVD Architect 24p template? That should look fine.

By horrible I mean (1) a significant loss of detail, (2) blurring around edges whenever there is any movement (I am new at this, so there is probably a technical term to describe what I am seeing) and (3) the video is a little brighter than the imported cineform avi (some blown highlights).

I do not see DVD Architect 24p template as an available template.

    > By horrible I mean (1) a significant loss of detail

You are going from 2.0 megapixel 1920×1080 HD to 0.3 megapixel 720×480 SD so if you are seeing about a 5x reduction in detail it’s because you have 5x less pixels to work with. It should still look better than a DVD made from standard definition video but it will look nothing like the original HD.

    > (2) blurring around edges whenever there is any movement

This is caused by frame blending during the telecine process of adding pulldown from 23.976 to 29.970.

    > (3) the video is a little brighter than the imported cineform avi (some blown highlights)

What device are you judging this on? Your PC or TV?

I’m referring to the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template. Perhaps Movie Studio doesn’t have that in which case there isn’t much you can do about it unless you can customize an existing template (I don’t know, I don’t have Movie Studio).

I would say, check first if you are using ‘intelligent re-sample’. If in doubt, select all, then go to properties. Turn re sample off.

    How does that work???

    Sony Vegas 9 Pro 🙂
