24p captured by Final Cut HD, editted on Final Cut Express?

Not sure, but can you create a 23.98 sequence setting in FCE? (dunno, don’t use it) if not, it won’t work. HOWEVER….

FCE should be able to capture the footage anyway at 29.97 and you can edit it all day long with it, it will look much the same in the end anyway. Only thing you’ll lose is the ability to compress the 24p footage AS 24p footage and be adding the pulldown pattern back on the fly with say a DVD Player… if the program is short, it’s sort of a moot point anyway. You can raise the data rate accordingly with your compression and get much the same quality in the end… also your data rate on these clips as you edit them will be the same as 29.97 so you won’t gain any disk space savings not getting it as true 24p.

Thanks for the reply. The footage is visible in FCE in the capture window, but when you try to log it it says it can’t find the time code. From this link https://www.dvshop.ca/software/finalcutcomp.html it says that 24p editing is disabled, probably something they did to try and reason the cheaper price.
We’ll try the capture to 29.97 with the pulldown and see if FCE doesn’t see it at as 24p anyway. It’ll only be running about 20 minutes (short film) so I’ll tell them with the higher quality it might not be noticable.

I’m pretty sure then, that you need to capture this material at 29.97. The difference in the end is really nada anyway. In order to see 24p on an NTSC monitor, it must be 29.97 with the pulldown added back in (FCP will do this on the fly, but FCE will not). In essence, this is what’s recorded in the first place anyway. That camera can only shoot 29.97, it’s just spreading 24 frames over those 30 by adding fields to half of them when it records in the first place. you’ll really not lose quality nor the film look capturing it as normal DV NTSC video.
