24p animtion files into 1080p/29.97 project
What is the correct method for using true 24 fps animation files in a 1080p/29.97 project?
Also, If I were to convert to DNxHD for fast import, should I force the frame rate to 29.97 at the encoder level or leave as 24fps and let the avid change upon import.
I am working with on an animation short that will be mixing 24fps animation files with 1080p/29.97 animation files. I want to work at 1080p/29.97. My final output will be encoded separately for a media server at 30fps.
And finally, will either of the above methods have an effect on the duration of the files? I am experimenting and see some differences.

Are you on 5.x or 5.5.x? If so, bring files into project that matches your original file’s frame rate (23.976 or 24.000). When you open that bin in a 29.97 project, it will be covered with pulldown to be 29.97 at the same original duration (one minute stays one minute). A 23.976 source will have a true 2:3 pulldown applied, whereas a 24.000 will have 2:3 pulldown for most of the time, except a frame adjustment every 1000/1001 to compensate for the 24.00 -> 29.97.

Michael, the OP was talking about a 29p project, so that would not be any form of 3:2 pulldown, would it?

Sorry – shorthand for frame insertion. Let’s call it a “less than ideal 2:3 pulldown”…

Won’t it just do a blended interpolated motion effect from progressive to progressive? I’d think blended frames would show up, right?

Just had chance to report my test findings.
1-Michaels’s suggestion of importing into 1080p/24 project then open bin into 1080p/29.97 project and Avid creates blended frames.
2-Import straight into 1080p/29.97 project and Avid adds 3:2
Both situations keep duration the same once in the Avid but appear to be 3 frames short compared to the original file when viewed in MPEG Streamclip. (Avid-3:17:07 vs Streamclip-3:17:10)
I think I prefer the 3:2 look over the blended frames. Especially if we have to export frame grabs for any reason.
Am I missing anything here?
