Our HDX900 has a shutter setting for “half”. Would someone please explain the practicle value of using this? Also, when I set the camera to 24p does it automatically set the shutter to 180 degrees?
I appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

    Thanks!

The HALF setting is synonymous with a 180 degree shutter–and is thus a very useful feature. Exposure time is half the reciprocal of fps, so at 24fps HALF yields a 1/48 shutter, at 60fps HALF yields a 1/120 shutter.

If you have the shutter turned off in 24p, then the exposure time will be 1/24 of a second (360 degree) which gives you way too much motion blur for most circumstances.

Definitely use the half-shutter when shooting 24. Without it, you get way too much blur. True film cameras do the same thing as the mirror rotates when exposing.

I also use half when shooting 30 fps if you are getting too much blur. It also helps tremendously when you shoot blue screen.

    Evan and Santellavision,
Great answers. Thanks for responding so quickly. We shoot a lot of 16mm so I understand the relationships. Knowing that turning on the shutter to half will reduce blur is great info! I’ll definitely test this one out.
    Thanks again!
