Any sugestions? Typicalliay we get Downconverted HD footage on tape at 23.98fps and I output 29.97 Beta masters, I can stumble my way through it but I was wondering if you guys have a workflow that works for you.

Just downconvert thru a capture card. Works for me…using an AJA Kona LH. Also works with the Decklink cards too. They add the pulldown to make it look right.

I simply open the AJA Control panel, set the secondary output to DOWNCONVERT…then output. Pretty simple.

I don’t know of any SD tape that records at 23.98. When downconverting HD to SD decks typically change 23.98 to 29.97 using a 2:3 pulldown.

Give us some more info about your workflow and we’ll give you some more specifics.

Usually I get a D-beta or miniDV tape with the downconverted footage at 23.98, I digitaize the footage at 23.98 , here is where I get foggy, do I now conevert the footage to 29.97 and edit with that? Or can I edit the 23.98 in a 29.97 timeline and output to beta, I guess what I’m asking is do I need to convert the footage and how, After Effects or Cinema-Tools?

    Thanks,

The tape plays back at 29.97…NOT 23.98. The film is telecined to the tape with a 3:2 pulldown, in order to get 24fps onto a tape that runs at 30fps. This pulldown can be removed (as you said you have done), but again, the tapes themselves run at 29.97fps…not 23.98. NO SD format runs at that speed.

If you are laying back to beta…why are you editing 23.98? Best to capture and edit at 29.97…RECAPTURE…not convert. Capturing 29.97 as 23.98, then trying to output back out as 29.97 is opening yourself up to a LOT of possible issues down the road.

KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid. Not that you are stupid…that is just the saying.

The ONLY reason to capture film footage telecined to DV or Digibeta at 23.98 is if you intend to produce a negative cut, output to DVD, or output to HD (upconverting the SD to HD).
