24fps question

If you’ve watched nearly any Hollywood produced DVD of the past few years you’ve likely seen a native 24p DVD. The DVD player is adding in the pulldown when you watch on a 29.97 TV and progressive scan DVD players can output 24p native to plasma monitors and projectors.

thanks noah. what wiould be the file choice for projection?
would this be mpeg-2 as in dvd? or would one use a less
compressed format at a 24fps rate for projection?

The simplest way is MPEG2 onto a DVD. There’s many other ways to project- like QuickTime to MPEG4 or WMP if that’s your thing. Worth some google time if you’re interested in higher than DVD quality.

thanks noah. can you give a pointer or tip as to where to
start; search criteria maybe? what i’ve done so far just
leads me to things that are either unspecific or more
compressed/lower quality than mpeg-2 (like mpeg-4).

This is an ancient thread, but it came up when I was searching for an answer to my output questions.

I’m editing RED footage. It’s 23.976. I assumed since DVD’s are for NTSC televisions, I should be exporting my media to 29.97, but now I’m wondering.

Should I be using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4’s MPEG-2 DVD 23.976p setting (vs. the “regular” setting which is 29.97) to author DVD’s?

If you are editing 24p footage on a 24p timeline you should encode the m2v as 24p, there is NO reason to make it 29.97. DVDs and DVD players automatically add the pulldown if the player is hooked up to a system that does not support 24p

Good to hear. I was assuming (and hoping) this was the answer, but I didn’t want to be encoding all our DVD’s as 24p (23.976), only to have DVD players not playing them correctly on NTSC TV’s needing 29.97 for whatever reason.

I’m pretty sure you’re wrong (this after spending hours encoding to 23.976 and compiling a DVD, setting poster frames, etc., only to find that the project won’t build, because Encore is telling me there are “gaps” in the timeline).

The chart shows that Blu-Ray will function at 23.976, but an NTSC DVD will ONLY work with 29.97.

well I have been authoring since 1999 and been encoding 24p from that time. When you encode m2v properly at 24p it puts flags in for the pull down so the player know to stream it as 29.97 if it is hooked up to a TV that does not handle true 24p. But every hollywood movie is done this way, the pull-down is added by the player not in encoding or source video.

Just saying… I encoded to DVD MPEG-2 23.976 using Adobe’s Media Encoder. When I pulled it into Encore, it wouldn’t build, I’m assuming because of the framerate.

In Encore, the setting for fps in the Project Settings Window is 29.97 and there is no way to change it (it’s grayed out, and Adobe’s sight shows that a DVD can only be written at 29.97).

So for future readers using Encore CS4 to author DVD’s… 23.976 seems to be the wrong way to go.

I could be wrong, but this is what I learned from my experience.
