I have an image sequence that was supplied at 1080/24fps. I need to render it out for a 1080i/29.97. The renderings I have tried have so far had questionable results. Either the 2 interlaced frames in the 3:2 pulldown are extremely artifact-laden, or I end up getting more of a 4:1 sequence, where the image is clean, but because the sequence is like 4 progressive frames and 1 progressive copy of the fourth frame, the motion is more juttery. Can anyone suggest the correct settings between the footage interpretation, the comp setting, and the render settings to get the correct 3:2 pulldown?

    Thanks,

try interpret and render lower fields and pulldown film fields output closest is WWSSW.
make sure image sequence is 23.976 because 24 fps will make a messed up pulldown.
    your output should see 29.97i

Thanks a bunch, Chris. Should the comp be set for 29.97 (the desired output) or 23.976? Let me make sure I’m getting your settings straight:
    Interpret Footage: Conform to 23.976
    Comp Setting: 1920/1080 29.97
    Render Settings: Field Render-Lower Field 3:2 Pulldown-WWSSW

    Thanks

you have a sequence that is progressive 24fps. bring it into ae, check the interpret footage>main window and make sure that the ae sees the footage as 23.976fps (as chris mentions), make sure that field separation is set to off.

drag that sequence onto the make comp icon, this should create a comp that is the footage’s frame size, duration and frame rate (23.976). now you can render the sequence to 29.97i.

add the comp to the render queue. click the render settings and set field render to the correct order (should be ‘upper’ for 1080) and choose a pulldown cadence from the dropdown menu (any cadence should work). you should notice that the frame rate has now changed to 29.97.

then render. it should now be a 29.97 clip with a pulldown.
