24FPS cinematic look
Posted by Pete Locascio on November 12, 2008 at 7:25 pmMy cameras are not capable of shooting at 24fps. Are there any tools or settings in Vegas Pro 8 that will mimic the cinematic look of 24fps,if my videos are shot at 29.9 fps? Thanks.

November 12, 2008 at 8:45 pmIf you want it to look like film, shoot your video like it was film.
That means taking the time to light the scene properly, make sure your camera moves are as smooth as possible, don’t use the zoom (at all, ever!!), turn off auto-iris (better yet, establish an iris setting and leave it there for anything that happens in that location).
I still remember getting a compliment a few years ago from a DP I know on how much he liked a particular video I had done. His comment was that it was very film-like.
I attribute it to following the “rules” listed above. -

Smooth and SLOW! What you can do in Vegas is render your final project to 24p to get the 24p cadence. This will look jittery if you pan too fast. If you had a camera that shoots 24p you would see this jitter in the LCD while filming. Since you don’t, you’ll need to experiment with how slow to pan. Also adding a nice ‘S’ gamma curve with Sony Color Curves FX will help crush the blacks and pop the whites. A little color correction is also in order.
There are plug-ins like VASST Celluloid and Magic Bullet Looks that will also give you more film looks. 24p is only a small part of “the look”.

Both Mike and John has hit the nail right on the head for you.
It is not just one thing to achieve that film like cadence.
Its doing your initial shoot like film….Then briliant
filmic color grading….(then adding film grain if you desire
that particular texture)….and finally add film motion by
intelligently converting your footage to 24fps progressive scan.Steve Rhoden
