  24@25 FPS sync with audio and so on

  Hello,

  I need to sync the DV PAL footage with audio.

  The footage was originally shot on 16mm at 24fps, then transferred via telecine to DV PAL MiniDV tapes (25fps) and captured as DV PAL avi. The sound was recorded on a set, as 24fps WAVE files. As a result it’s going to be 35mm film cut after EDL exported from premiere pro.

  Obviously the sound doesn’t match the footage. At first I put the footage into DV PAL 25fps project and tried to speed up the sound to 104% (in proportion to accelerated footage after telecine transfer) as I was told to by the author of the film. But then the guy who recorded the sound said that we can’t do that beause it would interrupt wav file metadata. After that I learned that I must use a special setting for such situation. Yet the one who told me so doesn’t use premiere pro, he’s Final Cut Pro (supposedly there’s such 24@25 option there) user, so he just couldn’t offer me more than such advice. I was also warned that even professionals could fail in that case so I’m aware it’s not so easy.

  Next thing I’ve tried is to put the footage into 24fps sequence and slow it down to 96%. The sound and footage match but still there’s the problem – the footage timecode shifts (?) and doesn’t match the actual timeline, for example:

  1st second – 24 frames
  2nd second – 1 frame + 23 frames
  3rd second – 2 frames + 22 frames
  and so on..

  So the final question is: will it work when in comes to EDL? Additionaly the picture seems to flicker after I’ve rendered it (I’ve used H264 codec since I couldn’t export it with regular “export to movie” option because there’s only PAL 25 fps to choose).

  I’m quite sure there must be a proper/regular way to proceed in such cases.

  I hope the description I wrote above is clear since I’m not english native speaker and much less in such matter. I don’t want to follow my intuition because I don’t know exactly how the process of transfer to 35mm (and at the same time from 25fps again to 24fps)looks like. I hope someone could help me. Any hints, advices will be very much appreciated.
