23min video for internet under 100mb?
Hi everybody,
I want to to export a small, yet sharp h.264 qt to be streamed from a blog. With 23min of video I know it’s gonna be near impossible to meet the clients wish to have a crisp video AND to meet the blog requirements of max 100mb/appr 320x266px dimensions.
The material was originally HDV then converted into Prores 422. I have exported following Ken Stone’s suggestions and yes, I’ve been fiddling with different frame and data rates. When I changed the export data rate from 3000 to 2000 it made quite a difference in bit rate and file size. But somehow the bit rate and file size barely goes down after decreasing data rate from 2000 to 750kbits/s. Am I getting something wrong here?
My last export which resulted in a 356mb file was:
400x225px
15 frames p/sec
Restrict to 750kbits/sIs there a way around this dilemma?

Horrible number for compression.

I guess you mean 100MB.100MB for 23 minutes film, means that you can allow a bit more than 4MB per minute of film.
That means 4 x 8.000.000 bits per minute, 32.000 bits per 60 seconds, which is the same than 533.333’333 bits per second, or 533Kbps.
If you discount the audio data rate, lets say 96Kbps, you can set 437Kbps for the picture without reaching the 100MB file limit.
That that data rate for such a small video size will yield a very, very good picture.But:
– Make the size 320×180, because that’s real 16×9. You can go to 400×224 (no x225) and the picture still will look very good.
– leave the original time-base: 25fps or 30fps. No need to reduce to 15fps.
– Make Multi-pass, and set KEY-FRAMES AUTO.
If you need better audio, increase the audio data rate and reduce the video data rate by the same amount.

Follow these guidelines from Vimeo and simply reset the pixel aspect ratio to your required specs (320×266).
I’m not sure why they are restricting you to 320×266. Following the Vimeo guidelines should allow you to get your movie under 100MB, even at 1280×720 and full frame rate.

Thanks for your swift replies. However, none of the suggestions generated a video smaller than 100mb; Rafaels suggestion on lowering the data rate gave me a blurry 310mb file and following Vimeo’s instructions (and Reid’s) gave me an ultra-crisp 425mb file at 1280×720.
The blog designer came back and said we’ll link to Vimeo instead, so it’s all good.

Obviously you haven’t fallowed my instructions.
(437K x 60 x 23)/8 = 75.382K = 75MB.
That’s the video size for the specs I gave you, and with that data-rate you get an MEGA-CRISP video at the requested size.

Thanks for your kind reply. If you have used 320×266, as you stated in your original post, you might’ve made it under 100MB. Also, if you used a 2000mbps data rate instead of 5000, you might’ve made it at 1280×720, not that it matters now. Best of luck with your project and again, thanks for the tip of teh hat.

Hi Rafael,
I actually made it 320×180. Perhaps it’s the Linear PCM (not AAC) that caused the size to remain the same. Total bit rate is 1798 and I restricted data rate in export to 437, like suggested.
Again, I appreciate how quickly people come to the rescue over here.

PCM audio is uncompressed. Stereo 23 minutes of audio is around 300 Meg depending on bit depth. AAC is data compressed.
