    Hello All,

I’m helping a fellow with his output – an indie feature. It is SD at 23.98, a 90 minute cut. We are outputing fram a Kona LH. He wants to layoff to BetaSP for the sound mixer, and spit out an OMF as well. The questions are twofold. The tape will be at 29.97, should that be drop or non-drop? And if we kick out an OMF from the 23.98 timline, will Protools play that in sync with the 29.97 tape?
If there is a preffered workflow, please let us know.

    Thanks,
    Todd

In case it helps, here is his letter to me:

The project was cut in FCP. Right now it exists as a
full 90 minute timeline with synced sound in 23.98p
timeline. We also had the reels split up with true
    23.98 framerate Quicktimes,

but the Larry, the sound mixer prefers to work to tape, and is set up for
that. He mentioned that you could possibly make us a
Beta to work to, and that would be great.

However, to get that 23.98 timeline sound for Larry to
work to the 29.97 tape is the concern I have right
now. The OMF at 23.98 should theoretically work to
the tape, but given that ProTools doesnt have a 23.98
setting….Anyway, if you could help me figure out the
appropriate settings from FCP that would be great.

    Is this a film finish?

The film can be mixed to a 29.97 beta SP master. The sound would then have the pulldown added when they go back to film. I am farily sure that protools will be locking to the 29.97 source as reference so the OMF should work. If you are concerned about this then copy the 23.98 timeline into a 29.97 timeline and export a second OMF from there.

If it is not a film finish, why cut at 23.98?

    David

    Peace and Love 🙂
