23.98 to PAL DVD and BLURAY
Posted by Federico Palumbo on December 3, 2011 at 5:20 amHi, i have a docu in 23.98fps, i need to make PAL DVD and BLURAY.
For the PAL DVD, to have max compatibility, shoul I convert the frame rate to 25? Should I Interlac? What is the best method, and how to do it?
Regarding BLURAY i have the same question…
Last, my DVD and BLURAY should work in South America and Europe, I have to use Region 0 or I have to make 2 different disk (region 2 and 4)?
Thanks

December 3, 2011 at 7:26 amWhat you need to do is make an NTSC 23.98 DVD. This will play on all players worldwide (including PAL) countries. Remember to set your region to 0 (open region)
For the Blu Ray, youd make a 23.98 title. This play play on all players worldwide as well

Do you think is ok to make a NTSC DVD for Europe market?

December 3, 2011 at 10:09 pmWhat are you planning on doing with the film specifically? Are you sending to specific people? Film fests? Are you making a bunch of copies and selling them in stores?

December 3, 2011 at 10:18 pmThe DVD will be donated, thousands of copies. Also has to be delivered to festival.
Anyway my point is do the best method to have the DVD and BluRay for each country.

December 3, 2011 at 11:02 pmStick with just making a 23.98 NTSC disc then. They will play worldwide.

December 5, 2011 at 2:43 pmI would recommend following this workflow. Create a 23.976 and a 24 fps master. For DVD PAL is 720×576 and NTSC is 720×480. There’s a significant difference is resolution between the two standards. PAL works better with a 24 fps exactly frame rate where as 23.976 on PAL will produce a frame jump every so often. I wrote an article on transferring HD footage to DVD which might help, as well.

December 5, 2011 at 3:49 pmHi,
my fotage is fullhd (1080) 23.98.you say:
[Brad Wright] “Create a 23.976 and a 24 fps master.”
Do you mean 1080@23.98 and 1080@24 or 576@23.98 and 576@24?

December 5, 2011 at 3:58 pmYou need to export at two different frame rates from Final Cut Pro. 24p is actually two standards. Film is exactly 24 frames and NTSC is nearly 24 frames (23.976). You want to create a film frame rate and an NTSC film frame rate.
