23.98 to 29.97 advice
Posted by Grant Myers on October 26, 2009 at 7:17 pmFolks:
I’m working on a show shot on RED at 23.98 that needs to be delivered in 29.97. Previously I did this by cutting at 29.97 but the results were not ideal. This time I decided to cut at 23.98 and lay off to a 29.97 tape. Can someone let me know if there are conform steps that need to be taken or can I simply lay off to a deck that’s recording at 29.97 and be done with it?
Thanks in advance.

October 26, 2009 at 7:43 pmWhat kind of system are you using? What kind of video card? I assume you’re going to HD tape?
For me I would simply have my Kona card do a live 3:2 pulldown and lay back to 1080i/2997.

October 26, 2009 at 7:45 pmI have a kona 3 card on the system, which is FCP studio 2. I was going to just let the kona card do it. Is there anything I need to know about the Kona settings?

October 26, 2009 at 10:05 pmThe Kona can do it. Just go into the Kona Control Panel and change the output to match what you are outputting too. 525i 29.97. Your footage will then be downconverted to SD, 525i, and to 29.97fps.
In the email you sent you ask “is 525I HD?” It isn’t. 525 is Standard Def. 720p, 1080i…those are HD.
You also ask: “We shot on RED and are delivering a show to spike in HD – is 525I the right resolution?”
No, 525i is NOT the right resolution for HD. If you are delivering to SPIKE then you should have a list of requirements from them…that list will tell you what tape format they take, and what frame rate.

October 26, 2009 at 10:26 pmOK. So then I don’t have an HD option coming from 23.98 in the Kona Card settings, which would seemingly bring me to the end of this proposed path, correct? What would be my best option for HD playback at 29.97?

October 26, 2009 at 10:36 pm[Grant Myers] “So then I don’t have an HD option coming from 23.98 in the Kona Card settings”
Why not? I do. Click on the FORMAT tab and in the PRIMARY (NATIVE) FORMAT you will see a drop down menu. Lots of 23.98 options listed in there…
[Grant Myers] “What would be my best option for HD playback at 29.97?”
To choose, from that list, a 29.97 option. BUT AGAIN…dude…look at your SPIKE TV DELIVERY SPECS. What do they want? You MUST give them what they want.

October 26, 2009 at 10:58 pmMy master needs to be 1080i at 29.97 – I should have clarified that. However, all 1080 options, except 23.98, are greyed out. Here is what my kona menu looks like:
I was under the impression that the Kona Frame Buffer needs to be set to the frame rate of the material i’m cutting – is that wrong? My knowledge of the kona card, in case you didn’t already guess this, is limited at best and the folks where I’m cutting don’t have the answers either so a big thanks for your help.

October 26, 2009 at 11:42 pmone last question. Is there any reason to conform 29.97 or 30p material to 23.98 before cutting it into my sequence, which contains 90% 23.98 footage? My old school instincts tell me yes but now I’m starting to wonder….
