23.98 Output to HDCAM-SR hitting wrong timecode
My project is 23.98. My timeline starts at 58:00:00:00. My bars start at 00:59:15:00 for 30 seconds. 5 secs black, 5 sec of slate, 5 black and sequence starts at 01:00:00:00 straight up. My HDCAM SR is getting 23.976PsF sync. Deck is set to external ref. Avid is set to Reference and is receiving the same sync. However, when I do a Digital cut, the bars are 2 to 4 frames late and consequently so is the rest of the timeline. Any guesses as to what is happening? In on a Symphony 4.03 on a mac pro 8 core.

1. Make sure you are on the correct machine control protocol for your HDCAM-SR (there are seperate ones for 1080i and 1080/24P editing). Sometimes they don’t auto detect correctly.
2. Try outputing with the servo ref on the VTR set to input video. (It should normally stay on Auto.) It might get you going if you have a weird reference problem. Don’t use External unless you have a specific reason for doing so.
3. Make sure that the VTR is set for HD reference (not SD) in the setup menu.
4. Open Video Output tool and check that the reference button is set to Tri-Level (not blank or Reference). Also make sure the green light is lit in Digital Cut tool.
5. You might be cutting into a basic with bad time code or with a skip in the time code. (HDCAM can do this if there’s enough gunk built-up on certain guides or if there’s a misalignment in the tape path.)
These should cover most of the weird output issues.

Thanks for your reply. It turns out that the A-10 menu (9-pin TC setting) was set to FC and the FC on the deck was set for 5994. So, I changed the FC setting to 444 23.98 and the digital cut hit the mark on every output. I think my reference was good all along. Thank you again for your time.
