23.98 HD to 29.97 SD
We have a 23.976 ProRes 1920 x 1080 sequence. We want to output a 29.97 720 x 486 to Betacam. We have an SDI to Component convertor on the betacam so we are sending the output of the Kona SDI to the Beta.
Kona 3 with the 7.5.1 driver on a FCP 7.0.3
What is the proper setup to convert the 23.976 to 29.97 with pulldown to the Beta? What should the Final Cut Playback setting be? 23.98spf, 29.97, other? What should the frame buffer of the Kona Control panel be set to? 1080 29.97 or 23.98?
Just curious because the only way to output to the beta that seemed to work was to have the sequence setting at 23.976 and the FCP playback setting at 1080 29.97 and the Kona Frame buffer at 1080 29.97 and the SDI output to 525 29.97. It just seemed to me that the FCP playback should have been set to 23.98 as well as the Kona frame buffer and the frame convert would be done after the frame buffer….is this incorrect?
Curious if you have some thoughts on this.

Set your Frame buffer to 1080sf23.98 that becomes your primary format as well as your video playback setting. Then set your secondary format to 525i29.97. The pull down to 29.97 will happen on the downconvert in real time. I dump to beta from Apple pro-res 23.98 timelines at least 3-4 times a week and I’ve never had an issue. I’m also uploading a screen shot of my Kona LHI control panel so you can see my settings

Set it up that way and the beta did not get a signal and the lines from the Buffer to the output were all red.
Again, we send SDI to the Beta which feeds an SDI to component convertor.
What is your Final Cut Playback settings in the AV settings set to?
Also what about your exact sequence settings?
Thanks for your help…we did exactly what you suggested and could not get the cross/down convert to work.

Keep FCP in the Kona3 1080sf23.98 easy setup that matches your sequence codec. Apply the down convert in the control panel on whatever SDI is going to the converter by right clicking on the output triangle and choose “secondary” and “525i29.97”.

A RESTART AND RELAUNCH OF FCP AND it now outputs correctly to the Beta. Apparently. Interesting.

So it worked finally to set FCP’s output to 23.976 as well as the control panel buffer and set the output to 29.97.
But then why did it also work to set FCP’s playback setting to 29.97 and then the control panel frame buffer to 29.97 and the output to 29.97? The output on the betacam ended up with the exact same pulldown cadence doing it both ways.
Could it be that both ways actually work? Wonder if an Aja tech could chime in here.

Either method, using 1080i 29.97 or 1080PsF 23.98, should produce good results.

While I am not a sanctioned AJA tech, absolutely it will work.
If you need to add proper 3:2 pulldown from a 23.98 timeline to a 1080i29.97 master, that’s how you do it. Simply set the video out to 1080i. Ain’t life grand?
