23.976 to 29.97 conversion
Posted by Ian Pullens on May 27, 2008 at 1:53 pmSo here is the thing:
Client changed delivery specs on us.
we have a rendered Lossless file that will take way to long to re-render.
QT Lossless 23.976 progressive 1920×1080
we need it to be 29.97 1080i
we know we need to turn on upper fields first but we are unclear as to if we need to do anything with the 3:2 pulldown… and if there is anything else we are missing.

August 31, 2010 at 6:39 pmI’ve got a similar issue going on, where I have 23.976 footage to work with, and my delivery format is 29.97.
When I simply drag my 23.976 footage into my 29.97 comp, it seems to play at the right speed, look just fine and renders well at 29.97.
What’s going on here? Is After Effects doing some conversion on the fly? Is there any reason NOT to use this most simple of “techniques”?
Cheers!

September 9, 2010 at 5:47 pmHey Dave,
Definitely am interested in quality results, that’s why I’m doing some research 🙂
I have one more clarification/question – the 23.976 footage that I’m working with has to have motion graphics done to it (ie. the footage spins, scales, etc) after it’s brought inside the 29.97 comp.
Should I still add pulldown and upper field first, converting the 23.976 to 29.97 before working with it in the 29.97 comp? I’m worried that if I add pulldown, and then move/rotate/scale that footage around, the fields will be at odd angles and look jumbled in the end. Does that make sense?
Thanks for the help!

September 9, 2010 at 6:23 pmah, that makes sense. simple == good.
i don’t think i’d even have to do any re-importing… i can just do my motion graphics at 23.976, then when it’s exported add pulldown and she’s done.
cheers!

September 27, 2011 at 3:44 pmHi Dave,
I’m running into a funny issue with a vendor. I’ve been sending spots to them for localization and adding pulldown (at their request) for broadcast. I’m working in 1080 23.98Psf and finishing at the same specs. The footage was shot and cut at 1080 23.98(just so theres no confusion). I’ve been using the “age old” method of pushing through AE and dropping the 23.98 spot into a new comp and exporting with the Upper Field First option using the first cadence option, WSSWW. This gives me what I believed to be a correct frame conversion with pulldown. Ready for broadcast. Apparently the vendor says there are “issues” with the files.
Another editor has done a different process. He simply dropped the 23.98 self contained QT Master into a 29.97 timeline in FCP and exported. This was what he delivered and we’ve never heard of any issues from the same vendor. Is his way the correct way? Seems he’s simply doing a frame convert without adding pulldown. His QT is clean with no fields where as mine does.
Which is the correct process?
Thanks in advance!

September 28, 2011 at 9:58 pmJeremy, FCP will not add in the proper pulldown unless your going to a 720p59.94 sequence. Then it adds in proper 3:2. Otherwise it adds a 4:2 cadence. AE is the best way to handle adding in pulldown. Although here is another method that Jeremy Garchow has informed me of by using Compressor. I’ve tried it and it works nicely. Especially for batching.
