23.976 edit -> 29.97 master
I’m working on figuring out something before I agree to a job and wondered about how to accomplish this workflow. A client has shot a bunch of footage at 1080/23.976 and the show master has to be 1080/59.94. If I capture and edit at 23.976, is it true that the Media Composer/Nitris can’t automatically add the appropriate pulldown on output? I’ve tried a couple of tests and it seems to stutter and choke. I don’t think I should have to use a software render to make this work – I know the Kona hardware and FCP can handle this automatically, so what is the best way to handle it with Avid hardware? I don’t know much about the Media Composer’s capabilities regarding frame rate conversion, but I assume if I change the frame rate of the sequence, it’ll want to render the whole show. Can/Should the original footage be captured somehow at 59.94 and the edit done at that rate instead? I’m sure other people are running into this workflow and hopefully someone has an idea. I guess I can rent a Teranex or other cross-converter to hang on the end of the output to do it, but I’d like to know if my hardware/software can support what I think is a simple pulldown add. Thanks for your input.
