  • 23.976 and 23.98 confusion

I have a project in AE where all of my Quicktime movies imported into the project window are interpreted as 23.976 in the Main Interpret Footage window but in the actual project window it shows them at 23.98. The comp I have them in is 23.976, however. Is this something that AE does automatically, and will it affect audio sync issues if I export it out? Shouldn’t the project window show the Quicktime files as 23.946 as well?

An error of four-one thousandths per second will manifest as a possibly but unlikely discernible audio sync issue of 6 frames after fifty seconds.
    How long is your sequence?

The sequence is broken up into two ten minute sections.

Does AE normally round it fps for 23.976 to 23.98 in the Project window?

Does AE normally round files with interpreted 23.976 fps to 23.98 fps in the Project Window?

AE does not “round” to 23.98, it is a problematic error in the composition settings presets. You should definitely change it yourself to 23.976 otherwise you may end up with some problems down the road. I’ve noticed some frame jumping when bringing in 23.98 AE renders into a 23.976 sequence in adobe premiere.

    wow.
Google turned up hundreds of relevant hits including wikis by respected authorities in the fields of video, transfers of film to tape, and NTSC-to-PAL conversions of all kinds of formats:

    23.976p:
Many 24p productions, especially those that are made only for TV and video distribution, actually have a frame rate of 24 * 29.97 / 30 frame/s, or 23.976frame/s (24/100.1% to be exact). Many use the term “24p” as a shorthand for this frame rate, since “23.976” does not roll off the tongue as easily. This is because the “30frame/s” framerate of NTSC is actually 30/100.1%, also referred to as 29.97frame/s – this framerate is matched when video at 23.976frame/s has a 3:2 pulldown applied. Similarly, 60i is shorthand for 60/100.1% fields per second.

    This was my workflow:
I captured 24PA footage in Premiere Pro.
After locking my final edit, I exported act 1 and 2 to Quicktime at 23.976 fps.
I imported the Quicktime movies into After Effects. When I created the Comp to hold them, I set it to 23.976 fps. This comp shows as 23.976 in the project window.
I set the Quicktime files to 23.976 as well under Interpret Footage, but they are still showing as 23.98 in the gray project window. I can’t get it to change.
