2:1 compression vs. 1:1
It’s been a while since I’ve worked on an Avid. Recently, I was given some footage that was layed off at supposedly the highest quality, but I come to find out the compression was the 2:1 variety, not 1:1. For those AVID gurus out there, is 2:1 good enough to air or is it a big compromise over 1:1. The editor who loaded it says there is no big difference, but it’s also possible that he doesn’t want to redigitize the material.
Thanks for the info – this is going on air as a local TV commercial, but still want the quality to be really good.

2:1 is fine for broadcast. If DV25 (about 5:1 compression) can play back, 2:1 is pure gold!
Seriously though, unless you’re doing heavy color correction or effects there’s no need to go to uncompressed. I spent two years at a TV station cutting promos/topicals/commercials etc…at 2:1 and the engineers never had a problem with it.
What’s the original source? Beta SP, Digibeta, DV? Again, unless you’re doing really heavy color correction don’t bother recapturing. You won’t see a difference.

Digibeta is actually a little over 2:1 compression. So you won’t be losing anything.

Digibeta is about 2:1 compression, but it’s not the same flavor or type of compression – so that’s not really comparing apples and oranges.
Having said that, I agree with you completely that using 2:1 compression in Avid is perfectly acceptable for editing commercials. How you light the scenes will be much more visible to viewers than whether you captured the footage at 2:1 or uncompressed.
