Just looking to buy another machine for some basic office stuff and occasional field editing. This will either be the new MacBook or the upcoming MacBook Pro. Seeing as the current MacBook uses USB-c, and this will likely make an appearance on the new MacBook Pro, can anyone confirm its compatibility with thunderbolt 2? We’ve invested in a big way in thunderbolt 2 peripherals – Apple monitors, RAIDs, expansion boards like the sonnet, and LTO tape machines. If there is no way these can connect via USB-c, then we have a big issue for all our workflows….

MacBook USB-C is not Thunderbolt compatible. I don’t doubt when new MBPs are announced they will be Thunderbolt 3 compatible. I haven’t seen rumors that pin that to a real date although I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them by November give or take depending on what vintage CPU they use.

[Craig Seeman] “on what vintage CPU they use.”

    Burn baby, burn!

The MacBook is USB-C, not Thunderbolt 3.

Thunderbolt 3 to TB2 adapters do exist today, if a new MBP comes out with TB3.

Ok, so as long as apple doesn’t mess around with the USB-c connector in the pro range, all our peripherals will be ok!

If they do, you’ll have to adapt the adaptor! 🙂

I think all TB3 has the same connection (which is the same as USB-C).

    TB2 to TB3 at a modest $73 for each.

Intel was showing off Thunderbolt 3 at SIGGRAPH last year running on a USB-C connection. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Apple put 2-4 USB-C/TB3 ports and nothing else on it. It seems like they could have included TB3 on the Macbook, but chose not to just because it’s not the type of machine that needs a premium connection of that sort.
