    Hi all . . . I’m running Media Composer 2018.12.9 on a 2012 Mac Pro, mid 2012 with 2 x 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processors.

Just wondering if anyone has successfully hacked their 5,1 Mac Pro to increase the number of cores and processing speed, thereby speeding up rendering time on Media Composer? Can it work? If so, how did you do it? In the end was it worth it?

I haven’t seen posts about hacking these Macs for years and given the Pandemic economy it seems sensible to consider now, if technically possible. Would also like to know if this is just a terrible, stupid, idiotic idea. Most other aspects of my system work very well.

Also . . . I just ordered a new GPU which is why I thought of this. I’m upgrading an Nvidia Quadro K5000 4GB GPU for Mac, to a Radeon RX 580 Mac Pro Bundle from BH Photo. Hoping this can reduce on screen latency with HQ 4k video, plus the manufacturer claims this GPU also increases render times. Any feedback on the card upgrade would also be most appreciated!

Pretty sure that MC hardly uses the GPU for rendering.

I think you’re right, their website doesn’t mention it, just checked. I read it somewhere previously and have heard people say this. Thanks

Thanks for the link Shane, I’m already natively running the fastest upgrade speed OWC offers so I guess I’m stuck at this processing speed unless someone else offers a faster processor for the Mac Pro and I’m guessing that’s not possible without causing compatibility issues. If it was possible OWC would probably already offer it.
