    Hi,
    I have a really nice looking video . mov (animation) that I made in Quartz Composer. It is 2000 x 800 pixels in size. Can anybody advise as to the best sequence settings in FCP and settings for Compressor export to a DVD format.
    My problem is that whatever I do the pixel aspect comes out really tall. In FCP it looks right. i.e pretty wide.

    DVD is 720×480 so your best bet is probably to put it into that size of timeline and resize it there to make sure it’s properly set for DVD.

    Ha,
    Thanks, that seems too easy! just did a quick export and build and looks OK. Now to follow on from my first question would a 4000 x 1600 video look even better than this when scaled? i.e bigger the better?

    Hi Carl,
    I think that’s a waist of resources and a risky operation. Resizing is something to be avoided when possible.
    Try to work in the format you will distribute.

    Not only that why not at least work is video resolutions. 1920×1080 would be more sense since it will scale to 16:9 SD better and cleaner. But if you are not going to use the graphic on something HD I would work in SD resolution 720×480 with the aspect ratio you want.

    I am going to do some explicit tests. I will post back the results. I am sure having high resolution video will compress better than going native all the way. More information to compress will result in more accuracy in the end. I am down sampling.
    HDV looks better than DV on SDDVD for example.
    Well that’s my theory. We shall see. I just I wish I had more texture memory for Quartz, 2000 x 800 is pretty much the limit on my laptop.

    You might consider fitting the 2000×800 file into an anamorphic 16:9 SD timeline (720×480 with anamorphic 16:9 checked). You should also turn motion filtering quality to best under sequence settings – video processing.

    Makes no sense to manage more info than your eyes can tell or that your screen can show.

    But why that size, it doesn’t match the aspect ratio of video, you are working with 20:8 vs 16;9. So when you convert you are either distorting, cropping or letterboxing the image.

    The other option would be to use 1280x720p.

    NEVER judge quality from a DV source. Your export out of AE should be Animation or 10-Bit Uncompressed when working in SD. DV is 8-Bit, good bit of compression and 4:1:1 color space.

    But in the end if you are happy with what you end up with that is all the matter.

    final cut pro has a 2048 pixel width limit.
